Get insights on mini split installation in Houston. Explore costs, benefits, and when they're the best choice over central AC.

A garage that turns into a sauna by noon. An upstairs bedroom that never cools down. A room addition the central system can’t keep up with. In Houston these are some of the most common comfort problems, and a ductless mini split is often the cleanest fix.
Multipoint AC & Heating installs mini split systems across Greater Houston. This guide covers what they cost, where they work best, and where central AC or a ducted heat pump is still the better choice. Call 832-963-3789 for a free estimate on a new system.
Does a mini split heat and cool? Yes, if it’s a heat pump model. Houston’s mild winters suit heat pumps well.
Do I need ductwork? No. Refrigerant lines run from the outdoor unit to each indoor head through a small opening in the wall.
How long does installation take? A single-zone install is often done in about a day. Multi-zone systems take longer.
Can a mini split handle Houston humidity? Yes, when it’s sized correctly. Oversizing is the biggest mistake (more below).
Garage Conversions and Bonus Rooms
Garages have no ductwork and almost no insulation, so extending central AC into them rarely works well. A mini split gives the space its own thermostat and its own cooling. See our project on turning a garage into a comfortable space with a mini split.
Room Additions and Sunrooms
An addition often pushes the central system past its limit. A mini split serves the new room without redesigning the whole duct system, which usually costs less than upsizing central equipment.
The Hot Upstairs Bedroom
Two-story homes in Houston fight heat stratification and attic heat all summer. If one or two rooms are the problem, a mini split in those rooms can be more practical than replacing the whole system. We cover the causes in why two-story Houston homes have worse AC problems and how to solve uneven room temperatures. For a real example, see two mini split units installed for zoned comfort.
Older Homes Without Ducts
Some older Houston homes were built before central air, or had ducts removed in a remodel. A mini split avoids the cost and mess of running new ductwork through finished walls and ceilings.
Rooms That Overheat From Sun Exposure
West-facing rooms with large windows can overwhelm a supply register. A dedicated mini split handles that load, and window treatments help too. See why your Houston home feels hotter near windows.
Mini splits aren’t the right answer everywhere. If the whole house needs cooling and the existing ductwork is in good shape, a central system usually costs less per square foot than several ductless zones. Costs add up as zones multiply, because every indoor head needs its own equipment and labor.

Capacity (BTUs). A small bedroom needs far less than a large open room or garage.
Number of zones. More heads means more equipment, lines, and labor.
Line set length and routing. Longer or harder runs cost more.
Electrical work. A new circuit or disconnect adds to the job.
Indoor head style. Wall-mounted is the least expensive. Ceiling cassettes and floor units cost more.
Efficiency and brand. Higher SEER2 ratings cost more upfront and save on bills over time. See our SEER rating guide for Houston homeowners.
Houston installers see the same cost pattern as the rest of the country: equipment is only part of the bill, and installation quality decides how long the system lasts.
Bigger is not better. An oversized mini split cools the room quickly, shuts off, and leaves the air damp. In Houston’s humidity that feels clammy even at 72 degrees.
Mini splits are inverter-driven and can run at low speed for long stretches, which is excellent for moisture removal. That only works if the unit is matched to the room’s real load. Sizing should account for:
Room size and ceiling height
Insulation, or the lack of it (garages are a common problem)
Window area and sun exposure
Heat from equipment, such as a home office or workshop
We size by load, not by a rule of thumb. Read more in our HVAC load calculation guide for Houston homes and how Houston humidity affects AC performance.
A good install is more than hanging a unit on a wall. At Multipoint, installation covers:
Placement planning. Where the indoor head delivers air without blowing directly on seating or beds.
Outdoor unit location. Level pad, clearance for airflow, and protection from debris and mowing.
Line set routing. Neat, insulated, and sealed where it passes through the wall.
Electrical connection. Correct circuit and disconnect to code.
Condensate drainage. A properly pitched drain, or a condensate pump where gravity won’t work. Houston humidity means a lot of water.
Evacuation and charge verification. The system is pulled to vacuum and checked, not just filled.
Startup testing. Heating and cooling modes, airflow, and drainage confirmed before we leave.

Mini splits are low-maintenance, but not no-maintenance:
Clean the filters monthly during heavy use. Most are washable.
Keep the outdoor unit clear. Trim vegetation and rinse off debris. Wooded areas such as The Woodlands, Kingwood, and Conroe shed a lot onto outdoor units.
Watch the drain. Houston’s humidity grows algae in condensate lines. A clogged drain can drip onto walls and floors.
Schedule yearly coil cleaning and a system check. Dirty indoor coils lose efficiency and can develop musty odors.
Our maintenance plans cover your whole system, and we explain why they matter in Houston.
Many online guides still describe a federal tax credit for heat pumps. That credit ended December 31, 2025, and mini splits installed in 2026 don’t qualify. Don’t count on it in your budget. Utility or state programs sometimes exist, but availability changes, so ask us what’s currently open before you decide.
Proper sizing. We match the unit to the room so humidity stays under control.
Straight answers. If central AC or a ducted heat pump fits your situation better, we’ll say so.
